Sten Grahn, Research project manager, Researcher, Senior Lecturer


Sten is a senior lecturer within the field of production development. He defended his dissertation in 2002. Between 2000-2006 he managed and worked within his own company Grabitech, within the field process and production optimization, servicing ABB, Bombardier, among others. Since 2006 he has worked with Fortum Heat AB and ÅF Industry AB, with energy related issues, as a manager, analyst and industrial researcher. His responsibilities for Fortum were to: develop and manage the private home heating division, manage energy related research projects, produce comparative cost calculations for multifamily housing and produce energy trend reports for long term investment purposes. The consultant work within ÅF has meant several types of responsibilities, e.g. to: develop regional plans to cost efficiently increase regional renewable energy use, report how solar energy solutions can be used for emergency units and to develop resource efficient business models. After returning to academia in 2012 he has focused on developing models to improve specification of desired production value from industrial projects, as a means to improve the project results.

Several years of experience from research, management and consulting within the manufacturing, process and energy industries, including a number of leading industrial roles and responsibilities.  Currently holding a position as senior lecturer at the department of Innovation and Product Realization, Mälardalen University. Also holding a position as a researcher for Swerea IVF AB. Main research interests concerns product, production and process optimization, especially identification of how resource efficiency efforts should be balanced, to generate maximal long term profits and environmentally sustainable business. This includes development of resource efficient industrial products, industrial processes and business models. It also includes utilization of technological development trends to maximize long term resource efficiency results, and using robotics and automation as a means for production efficiency.
