Abstract
Maintaining and enhancing the positive results of a Lean Production implementation requires continuous improvements of the production system from a holistic perspective.
Studies have shown that successful enterprises concerning improvement work have a holistic management system including one integrated improvement initiative. The improvements must also be based on several methodologies since no methodology alone can handle all different challenges and perspectives on improvements. It is also important to combine incremental and radical improvement to increase competitiveness.
To develop and sustain the improvement work it is important to make improvements a business process. This might be complicated since an overall improvement process must include all aspects necessary when taking a holistic perspective. There is a need to explore the overall improvement process since it is indefinitely described in literature. Hence, the purpose with this study is to investigate improvement work’s interaction with the business and visualize the context of improvement work.
A concept model that describes the improvement work’s interaction with the business has been developed. The concept model consists of seven parts: strategy; management system; production system; performance measurement system; improvement system; programs/methods/tools; perspective of improvements.
