Backfill of deposition tunnel for spent nuclear fuel - pre-study of block handling
Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) are responsible for developing the technology for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The repository will be constructed in granitic bedrock at about 500 m depth. As a part of this effort, a number of technology development projects are performed. One of these is to investigate how to backfill deposition tunnels with blocks of bentonite clay, once the canisters with the spent fuel have been deposited by a deposition machine.
A pre-study is initiated during 2009 in order to investigate technical possibilities for the placement of backfill blocks. SKB has initiated a pre-study on the robot method and in this effort identified a collaboration between SKB, Robotdalen and Mälardalen University.
